ASHLAND (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA - On July 24, 2011 at 06:16 hours the Ashland Fire Department (American and Washington Fire Companies), and Ashland Ambulance were dispatched to 732 Walnut Street for a house fire. The caller reported to the 911 Center there was flames coming from his dinning room of his house. The male resident was able to escape the flames and run to a neighbor’s home for help.

The Ashland Police and Ashland Fire Chief arrived in minutes and found smoke coming from the home and confirmed it was a working fire. The smoke continued to spread quickly and moved through out the first and second floor of the home. The fire chief quickly ordered a second alarm to be dispatched to the scene due to the extreme hot weather. The Girardville-Rangers Fire Company, Englewood-Butler Township Fire Company, Mount Carmel Anthracite Fire Company, Gordon Fire Company and the Altamont-West Mahanoy Township RIT team were dispatched to the scene.

Engine 38-10 staged on Alpha-Bravo Corner and made an offensive attack to stop the fire. Ashland Engine 38-15 staged in the alley to the rear of the home and advanced hose lines to the back door of the residence. The Ashland Ladder staged on the Alpha Side and sent it ladder to the front roof to get ready for ventilation operations. Girardville Engine 45-10 staged east of the home on Walnut Street and sent their crew to the Alpha Side of the home. Englewood Engine 369 and Gordon Engine 46-10 staged on Center Street at a hydrant. Altamont Engine 367 staged behind Engine 38-10 and sent its RIT Team to the front of the home.

The interior attack crews found the fire in the first floor dining room. The attack crew used their hose line to extinguish the “room and contents fire”. The smoke moved throughout the home to the second floor and attic. The interior crews gain access to the second floor and open up the windows. Fire fighters advanced to the attic to search for any possible extensions. The fire was knocked down after 06:45 hours and over haul operations started.

The home received extensive damage that left the family displaced. The fire chief reported that the owner injured his foot while escaping the fire and had to be transported to local hospital by EMS. Ashland, Lost Creek and Girardville Ambulances responded to the scene and assumed control of rehab operations.

The majority of the mutual aid fire units cleaned up and cleared the scene by 08:00 hours. Ashland fire fighters remained on the scene throughout the morning investigating the fire. Altamont Engine 367 was redirected to respond to Mahanoy City were fire fighters were fighting another working fire.
