RYAN TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On October 6, 2010 at 11:30 hours the Ryan Township, Rush Township, Delano Township Fire Companies, Ryan Township Ambulance and Medic 11 were dispatched to the Burma Road for a vehicle accident with entrapment. The accident was reported to be in the area of the Mountain Valley Golf Course in Ryan Township.
Ambulance 976 arrived first and found a passenger car overturned, on its side and into a tree. The crew examined the vehicle and found the driver heavily entrapped in the vehicle. Mahanoy City West End Rescue 993 was then placed on stand by in station for a possible response. Rescue 26 arrived on the scene and ordered Rescue 993 to respond to the scene to assist with the rescue. Rescue 26 fire fighters stabilized the vehicle with cribbing and rescue struts. Hometown Engine 25-10 arrived and staged behind Rescue 26. Hometown fire fighters deployed a hose line to provide protection for the rescuers.
Delano Engine 6-10 was directed to go to the Mountain Valley Golf Course to set up a landing zone for MedEvac. Shenandoah Medic 64 was returning from a call and was sent to the accident to assist Medic 11. Rescue 993 arrived on location and its crew reported up to the rescue scene. Rescue 993 fire fighters deployed its rescue tools and saws to assist with the rescue. The vehicle roof was removed and the dash board was displaced. It was determined the driver was still stuck under the dash board. Ambulance 977 went to the landing zone, picked up the helicopter crew and brought them to the accident scene. Rescuers had to cut trees and the bottom of the vehicle to remove the drivers trapped feet. The driver legs were finally freed and he was moved to a long board. The driver was extricated from the vehicle and moved to Ambulance 977. The ambulance transported the driver and the flight crew to the landing zone. The driver was flown to a trauma center to be treated. The driver passed away a few days later at the hospital from his injuries.
