NORTH MANHEIM TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On March 28, 2012 at 17:30 the Cressona and Schuylkill Haven Fire Departments were dispatched to 1446 Woodlane in North Manheim Township for a possible house fire. The fire was called in by a passerby traveling on Route 901. He spotted smoke and flames shooting from the roof of the North Manheim Township home.
The Cressona Fire Chief and Engine 41-10 went on scene and reported they had smoke showing from the front windows of the ranch style home. Cressona Engine 41-15 was the second unit on scene and staged behind of Engine 41-10. The Cressona Fire Chief established incident command and requested additional tankers and a RIT Team to the scene. A second alarm tanker taskforce was then dispatched to the scene. Tankers trucks from multiple southern Schuylkill County fire companies were then dispatched. Pottsville City Engine 72 and Engine 11 was sent to perform RIT Operations.
Fire fighters placed ground ladders into service on the A Side of the home. The first arriving engine crews started offensive operations and enter the home with hose lines. The attack crews found fire throughout the first floor and extending into the attic crawl space. Cressona Engine 41-15 then set up and prepared to supply water to Cressona Engine 41-10. Schuylkill Haven Ladder 725 arrived on the scene and staged on the A-B Corner of the structure. It sent its ladder to the roof to allow the vent team to gain access. Pottsville Engine 11 moved up to the fire scene and supplied its water to Ladder 725.
It was then decided to have Schuylkill Haven Engine 733 draft from a dump tank and feed Schuylkill Haven Engine 737. The dump site was set up at the intersection of Woodlane and Gordon Nagle Trail. The dumpsite caused the Gordon Nagle Trail to be shut down to traffic. Tanker trucks from Schuylkill Haven, Deer Lake, Landingville, Wayne Township, and Mount Carbon responded to the fire scene and supplied water for fire fighting operations. Chief 41 made a special request for Pine Grove North End RIT Team to respond to the scene to assist and stand by.
The fire was quickly knocked down in twenty minutes by the Cressona and Schuylkill Haven fire fighters. Incident Command placed the fire control in a half hour from the first dispatch. The home’s first floor was heavily damage and had to be carefully overhauled to prevent rekindles.
Schuylkill Haven-Pottsville EMS and American Red Cross were on scene to provide Rehab operations. Saint Clair fire fighters stood by at a Schuylkill Haven fire station throughout the incident. A number of local fire police units were called to the scene to shut down Gordon Nagle Trail. The majority of fire units left the fire scene and all roadways were reopened before 20:00 hours.
