EAST UNION TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On March 19, 2012 at 08:30 hours the East Union Township Fire Department (Sheppton and Brandonville Fire Companies), Mahanoy City West End Rescue, and Shenandoah ALS were dispatched to Route 924 - Brandonville Blvd in East Union Township for a vehicle accident with injuries.
Multiple phone calls reported the accident is near the Brandonville Fire Station and there is heavy entrapment. The accident was reported to be a tractor trailer that was overturned and down an embankment. Additional phone calls reported the driver was still trapped in the cab and not responsive.
Brandonville Engine 9-15 and Shenandoah EMS personnel arrived in minutes and found the driver heavily entrapped. The load of large water pipes was thrown about the accident scene blocking access to the truck’s cab. Medic 64 then made a request to have air medical place on stand by. Sheppton Engine 9-10 and West End Rescue 993 arrived and worked on stabilizing the crush truck cab. Rescuers removed multiple parts and pieces of the cab to gain access to the driver. Brandonville Engine 9-15 deployed a hose line to protect the rescuers of a flash fire.
Chief 9-01 assumed command and notified the township officials concerning the spilled load of pipes. It was determined by the rescuers that the driver was trapped under the cab and would require an extended extrication. Command then request that Pottsville Yorkville Rescue 63 and Hazle Township Fire Rescue be dispatched to assist with the complicated extrication.
Forty five minutes into the rescue it was learned the driver succumbed to his injuries in the wreckage. Command then switch operations in to a recovery mode through out the rest of the incident. The additional arriving rescue teams assist in removing the driver’s body from the cab. It was then decided to use tow trucks to lift the entire tractor trailer. A call then went for two heavy duty tow trucks from DB Towing Service of Hazle Township.
The two large trucks arrived on location and were positioned next to the demolished cab. Tow truck personnel attached cables and chains to the torn apart tractor cab. The cab was then careful raised high enough so rescuers can stabilize it with rescue struts and cribbing. Rescuers were then able to access and extricate the body of the truck driver for the coroner. Shenandoah Heights Engine 882 was dispatched and provided traffic control by shutting down Route 924. The roadway was closed for about an hour during the recovery procedure.
