MAHANOY CITY, (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY) PA: On July 30th, 2012 at 02:30 hours the Mahanoy City Fire Department (Five Stations), Mahanoy City Ambulance, Goodwill-Frackville Ladder 43-20 and Altamont Engine 367 (RIT Team) were dispatched to Railroad and north Main Streets in Mahanoy City for a house fire.
Humane Engine 451 arrived first to find a vacant condemned three story row home fully involved. Engine 451 and Citizens Engine 454 obtained water supplies and mounted a defensive exterior attack on the fire. The remaining engines of the Mahanoy City Fire Department obtained water supplies and operated large hose lines. Altamont’s RIT Team stood by in front of the well involved structures and was not activated.
Department Chief established command and requested the second alarm. A number of large master streams were then placed into service to stop the fire and to protect the exposures. Tower 456, Ladder 457, Ladder 43-20, Ladder 49-22 and Ladder 745 set up their elevated master streams in an attempt to stop the fire from jumping into the roofs of the next door exposure homes.
The initial fire building collapsed into the street and forced Command to order the third alarm to the scene. A large collapse zone was established and additional elevated master streams were placed into service. Pottsville City Engine’s 41 and 32 obtained additional water supply from the Mahanoy City Creek which runs underneath the streets of town. Multiple master streams operated at the fire scene until the mornings early light. The second and third alarm units were eventually released from the scene at 06:00 hours.
Mahanoy City fire units operated on the fire ground for over fourteen hours and had to be refueled on the scene. EMS personnel and the American Red Cross provided Rehab services for the exhausted fire fighters. A total of five homes were destroyed and were required to be razed later in the day with a large excavator.
