REEDSVILLE - WAYNE TOWNSHIP, (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY): On Thursday 1-19-2012 at 12:45 hours the Wayne Township Fire Department (Summit Station and Friedensburg Fire Companies), Schuylkill Haven Liberty, Pine Grove Ladder, Strausstown-Berks County and Schuylkill Haven EMS were dispatched to commercial building fire. Route 183 in Wayne Township for a. The caller reported there was a structure fire at Alpine Building & Post Supply on Route 183 in Wayne Township. Two employees in the office building said they spotted the fire coming from the roof of the building and called 911.
Summit Station Chief 34-01 arrived on scene and found thick black smoke coming from the old one story office building. Fire fighters from Summit Station arrived first and found a working fire in the roof of the building. Fire fighters were able advance hose lines from Engine 34-55 to the rear and side doors of the building in attempt to attack the fire. Engine 34-10 staged on Route 183 on Side Alpha and deployed hose lines to the front door.
Incident Command decided the roof supports were to well involve and ordered all personnel out of the structure. Fire fighters then mounted a defensive attack and operated outside the structure with multiple hose lines. The pumping engines were then feed water from tankers from Schuylkill and Berks County. The additional arriving tankers staged on Route 183.
Pine Grove’s Ladder 58-25 staged on the Alpha/Bravo Corner of the building. Pine Grove Ladder 58-25 was then set up to the Bravo Side of the roof. A ventilation team was then sent to the roof to make a vent hole to allow the smoke to escape. Tankers then continued to supply the two Wayne Township Engines with water through out the fire. Schuylkill Haven Liberty Engine draft from a near by pond and refilled tankers.
A forklift tractor was brought over to the fire scene from the nearby warehouse. Pine Grove fighters utilized their ladder to cut sections of the roof apart. The forklift was then used to rip the building apart so the fire fighters can do overhaul. Pine Grove fire fighters then deployed a hose line up the ladder to the roof. Class A foam was then used to finally to extinguish the fire in the gutted building.
The fire was then placed under control in less than two hours with out incident. The majority of engines and tankers were then placed available and returned to service. The fire was to have started in the roof or ceiling area and spread through out the structure. The century old building received major fire damage and will now need to be rebuilt.
