McADOO (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On February 5, 2012 at 18:45 hours the McAdoo Fire Department and McAdoo EMS were dispatched to 654 south Kennedy Drive for an electrical utilities investigation. The McAdoo assistant fire chief arrived in minutes and found smoke coming from the basement and first floor of a double home. He then requested that a second alarm be dispatched right away for a working house fire. Hazle Township Fire Department, Tresckow Fire Company, Mahanoy City RIT Team (Humane Fire Company No.1, Citizens and West End Fire Company), Medic 11-APTS, Beaver Meadows Fire Company, Delano Township Fire Company, West Hazleton Fire Department, and Rush Township Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.
McAdoo Engine 49-15 and Ladder 49-22 arrived on scene first and staged on Side Alpha of the home. Engine 49-15 established a water supply from a hydrant on south Kennedy Street. McAdoo Keystone Engine 49-10 staged south of Engine 49-15 and sent its crew to Side Alpha. Two hose lines were advanced from Ladder 49-22 into the front door of the home and into the basement. The hose lines were charged and knocked down the fire in minutes. Incident Command was then informed there was extension into the wall and to the attic. Interior search crews then found a working fire in the attic. Ladder 49-22 sent its ladder to the roof on the Alpha Side. A roof team was sent up the ladder to make roof vent cuts to open up the attic. Fire fighters then advanced additional hose lines into the attic to stop the advancing fire.
Hazle Township Tower-Ladder 105 was ordered to set up on the Delta Side and go to the roof on the Charlie Side. Truck crews on the roof were ordered to make overhaul holes and search for extensions in the Delta Side roof area.
Tresckow, West Hazleton, Delano Township, Beaver Meadows, West Hazleton and Hazle Township Engine companies arrived and staged in the two block area. A manpower staging area was established and fire fighters stood by for assignments. The additional engine crews backed up the attack crew and entered the next door home and searched for extensions. The rear walls of 654 south Kennedy Drive were opened up and overhauled.
The Mahanoy City Fire Department West End Rescue 993 and Humane Engine 451 staged south of the fire scene on south Kennedy Drive. The Mahanoy City RIT team stood by on the Alpha-Delta Corner of the structure. The second alarm mutual aid fire companies assisted with overhaul operations. The smoke conditions in the two homes were vented out with fans. The fire was under controlled in less than an hour with no rekindles. A number of mutual aid fire companies stood by in McAdoo while the McAdoo fire fighters took up.
The fire chief believes the fire was started by an electrical problem in the basement. The fire broke out in the basement and spread through the walls to the attic. The fire chief reported that there were no injuries to residents or fire fighters. The two homes received major or moderate damage and displaced five residents.
