SUNBURY ROAD - BARRY TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On February 13, 2012 at 05:30 hours the Gordon Fire Company, Butler Township-Fountain Springs and Lavelle Fire Companies, Ashland Rescue, AREA ALS, and Ashland Ambulance were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Route 901 at Derr Road. The phone caller reported that the accident involved two pickup trucks. Multiple additional phone calls now reported fire and entrapment.
Assistant Chief 4-05 arrived on scene and reported there was no fire but one driver was trapped in the vehicle. The two vehicles collided head-on and were on the north bound side of the roadway. Engine 4-12, Engine 46-10 and Ashland Rescue 38-50 arrived on scene and found the drivers still in their vehicles. The one vehicle was sitting up the embankment with the driver trapped inside.
The first responders extricated one driver from the first pickup truck and moved him to the Ashland Ambulance. The driver was then evaluated by AREA ALS personnel in the Ashland ambulance. The injured driver was then transported to a hospital near Pottsville to be treated.
Ashland Rescue 38-50 arrived on location and parked next to the wrecked vehicles. Ashland fire fighters deployed their rescue tools to the pickup truck with entrapment. The doors were removed from the pickup truck to gain access to the driver. The driver was then placed on back board and removed from the truck by fire fighters and EMS personnel. The injured driver was then transported to a waiting medical helicopter at the Joe Zerby Airport. The patient was then flown to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.
The Butler Township and Gordon fire fighters inspected the two damage vehicles for leaks. Fire police assisted the State Police by providing traffic control around the accident scene. Fire fighters remained on the scene until a tow trucks removed the vehicles from the accident scene.
