FOSTER TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On October 20th at 06:10 hours the Goodwill-Frackville Fire Company and Minersville Ambulance were dispatched to Interstate 81 for a motor vehicle accident with unknown injuries. State Police arrived on location and reported the vehicle was off the roadway with the driver trapped. The accident was to be just south of the Minersville exit on Interstate 81 at mile maker 114.
Chief 43 and Engine 43-10 arrived on scene first and found the driver still in the vehicle. The vehicle was on its roof and into a ditch blocked by trees. Chief 43 upgraded the incident and request that additional rescue squads be dispatched. Pottsville Yorkville Rescue 63, Minersville Rescue 518 and Cass Township Clover Engine 363 be sent to the scene. Minersville Ambulance 52 arrived and made contact with the trapped driver. The driver informed the EMS crew he was not hurt by confined to the vehicle.
Engine 43-15 arrived and staged behind Engine 43-10 in the passing lane. Frackville fire fighters established traffic control and stabilized the vehicle. The engine crew used a chain saw to cut and removed trees around the vehicle. Minersville Rescue 518 arrived and sent its crew to assist the Frackville fire fighters. Hydraulic rescue tools from the Frackville and Minersville units were deployed to the vehicle. Rescuers used the “Jaws of Life” to force open passenger door to gain access to the driver.
The driver was able to exit the vehicle by himself and was exam by EMS. Rescue 63 was then canceled on scene due to the patient being already extricated. Minersville ambulance personnel evaluated the driver for injuries caused by the accident. The driver was uninjured and refused to be transported to a local hospital by EMS.
