MAHANOY TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On Saturday November 12, 2011 at 07:35 hours the Mahanoy City Fire Department (Four Stations – Humane, Citizens, Good American, and West End),Ryan Township Tanker, Hometown-Rush Township Tanker, Altamont Engine 367 (RIT Team), Shenandoah ALS and Mahanoy City Ambulance were dispatched to 14 Suffolk Road in Mahanoy Township for a house fire with entrapment. The phone caller reported there was smoke coming from the home and there may be still someone inside. The Mahanoy City firefighters arrived in a minutes and found intense flames coming from the rear of the 2 ½ story home. The fire continued to spread quickly and began to move to exterior and second floor.
Shenandoah and Mahanoy City ambulances arrived on location and found a burnt female who was trying to re-enter her burning residence to rescue her cats. The patient and her cats were treated by EMS Personnel on the fire scene. Frackville ambulance then transported the injured female to the Ashland hospital to meet a waiting medical helicopter. The patient was then flown to the burn center near Allentown.
Mahanoy City Chief 459 arrived on location and assumed incident command of the fire. Chief 459 sized up the incident and confirmed it was a working house fire. He then requests the second alarm and the tanker taskforce dispatched to the scene to assist with operations.
Engines 465 and 451 arrived on scene first and went to work establishing an offensive attack. Engine 451 established a water supply from a hydrant that was a quarter of mile away from the burning residence. Engine 451 then laid in to the scene dropping its five inch supply line to the front of the home. Engine 465 parked on the Alpha-Delta corner of the home and deployed hand lines. The crew of Engine 465 made an offensive attack into the home to stop the fire in the kitchen. Engine 451 then supplied Engine 465 with hydrant water to attack the fire.
Engine 367, Tanker 461, and Rescue 993 staged on Suffolk Road and sent their crews to assist the first arriving engines. The additional engines crews backed up the attack crews who were inside the residence attacking the fire. Citizens Tower-Ladder 456 staged on the Alpha Side of the residence and sent its crew to the roof to conduct horizontal ventilation operations. Shenandoah Squirt 745 staged on the Alpha Side of the home and sent its ladder to the roof. Shenandoah fire fighters then proceeded to the roof to assist with the ventilation operations.
Tankers responded from Sheppton-East Union Township, Fountain Springs-Butler Township, Ryan Township, and Rush Township to help transported water to the fire scene. The Pottsville City Humane and Goodwill engines responded to the scene provided second due RIT operations.
The smoke and fire conditions in the home improved and the fire was brought under controlled in less than an hour. The crews had the fire out and the home overhauled by 9 AM with no rekindles. Engine 451 remained on the scene for two hours and soaked down the steaming remains.
It was reported that there were no injuries of fire fighters. The kitchen of the home was destroyed and caused the female resident to be displaced. American Red Cross’s emergency unit assisted the EMS personnel in providing rehab to the fire fighters.
