BARRY TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA - On November 10, 2011 at 23:30 hours the Butler Township (Lavelle and Fountain Springs), Gordon fire companies, Ashland Rescue, Shenandoah Medics and Ashland Ambulance were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment. The accident was reported to be involving two vehicles with occupants trapped. One vehicle was overturned with a driver trapped inside. The accident was found at the intersection of Route 901 (Sunbury Road) and Talyorsville Road in Barry Township.
Ashland EMS was on scene first and found a two vehicle accident with injuries. One passenger vehicle was on the roadway with front end damage. The second vehicle was on its side, resting against a group of trees, and with an occupant trapped inside. Gordon Engine 46-10 arrived on scene and was ordered to deploy a hose line. Lavelle Engine 4-12 and Fountain Springs Engine 4-10 arrived and staged on the roadway north of the accident.
Ashland’s Ambulance Rescue 38-50 responded to the scene and proceeded with the extrication. Rescuers stabilized the vehicle by using rescue struts to keep the vehicle secured. Ashland fire fighters then removed a portion of the roof to gain access and to extricate the trapped occupant.
Ashland EMS responded with two ambulances and transported the injured. One driver was transported from the scene and taken to a local hospital by one Ashland’s ambulance. The trapped driver was transported to a nearby parking lot of a church to wait an incoming air medical helicopter. Fire fighters also reported to the temporarily landing site and stood by for the helicopter. The Lavelle and Gordon engine crews remained on the scene until released by the State Police.
