CRESSONA (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA: On June 6, 2011 at 08:15 hours two State Troopers were traveling on Route 901 and spotted smoke coming from a garage to the rear of 49 River Street.
The Cressona and Schuylkill Haven Fire Department were then dispatched to the rear of 49 River Street for a working garage fire. The State Troopers then observed smoke coming from the residence and a male sitting on the back porch in a chair. The male was unresponsive due to a facial gunshot wound and had to be removed from the burning porch by the troopers. Neighbors aided the troopers in treating the male until the EMS personnel arrived on the scene.
The Cressona Fire Chief arrived on scene and reported he had smoke coming from the front of the home at 49 River Street. He then confirmed a working garage and house fire and requested a second alarm to the scene. Fire companies from Orwigsburg, Pottsville, and Wayne Township were then dispatch and responded.
Schuylkill Haven Medic 63 treated the shot male and ordered MedEvac to fly to the Cressona Mall. Mount Carbon and Orwigsburg fire fighters were then directed to respond to the mall to set up a landing zone.
Cressona Engine 41-10, Cressona Engine 41-17 and Ladder 725 were the first units on the scene and went into operations. Cressona Fire Chief established incident command and request a third alarm to the scene. Engine 41-17 hooked to a hydrant south of the fire scene on the Gordon Nagle Trail. The engine then dropped LDH on Route 901 and laid into the burning garage on Produce Street. Engine 41-17 was then supplied with hydrant water and deployed a number of hose lines. Cressona Engine 41-10 parked behind Engine 41-17 and sent its crew to assist the 41-17 crew. Schuylkill Haven Ladder 725 parked close to Engine 41-17 and set up its elevated master stream. The ladder was then supplied by Engine 41-17 and flowed water from its ladder onto the collapsing garage.
Liberty Engine 737 staged on Side A of the home and deployed hose lines into the residence. Schuylkill Engine 732 established a connection to a hydrant on River Street, dropped LDH and feed Engine 737. Schuylkill Engine 733 parked a block away on River Street and sent its crew to the fire scene. Engine 732 crew advanced a number of hose lines into the home. Schuylkill’s additional fire fighters set up ground ladders and went to the lower roof to vent. The attack crews found fire throughout the home and extending to the roof.
Pottsville West End Ladder 51 arrived and staged on the A Side in front of Engine 737. Ladder 51 sent its main ladder to the roof with a crew to do ventilation. Pottsville City Engine 11 established a third water supply from a hydrant north of the fire scene and staged behind Ladder 51. Rescue 63 and Squad 72 were the RIT companies and staged on the A Side of the structure. The second and third alarm engine companies from Minersville, Landingville and Wayne Township staged in the Scott Mill Works parking lot and sent their manpower to the scene. Pine Grove fire engines stood by in the Schuylkill Haven fire stations during the incident.
The hose line teams were able to knock down the flames in the home by 09:00 hours. Fire fighters extinguished the last flames and over hauled the fire in the home and the garage. The mutual aid fire units were picked up and cleared the scene before noon. Schuylkill Haven EMS, Pottsville EMS and American Red Cross were on scene for Rehab operations.
The Incident Commander and fire investigators treats the two building and found numerous origins of the fire. The cause of that fire was not determined and is currently being investigated by the State Police Arson investigator.
