RYAN TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA - On January 8, 2011 at 14:30 hours the Ryan Township Fire Company, Delano Township Fire Company and Rush Township-Hometown Fire Companies; APTS Medic 11, Shenandoah ALS and Ryan Township Ambulance were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment. The accident involved one vehicle and was just south of the Mountain Valley Golf Course on the Burma Road in Ryan Township.
State Police and Mahanoy City LT 456 went on scene and found one vehicle, off the road, with two individuals trapped. The vehicle was into the wood line and resting against a number of trees. Chief 26 arrived on scene and evaluated the entrapment for the responding rescue company. Ryan Township Police and Fire Police established traffic control at the scene of the accident.
The crews from Medic 11 and Ambulance 976 assessed all the vehicle occupants for injuries. They determined the trapped occupants would need to be taken to a trauma center. A medical helicopter was then requested and ordered to fly to the nearby golf course. The helicopter was told to land in the parking lot at the Mountain Valley Course in Ryan Township. Hometown Engine 25-10 was directed to go to the golf course and to establish the landing zone.
Ryan Township Rescue 26 arrived and staged next to the damage vehicle. The rescue crew deployed their hydraulic rescue tools to the vehicle and started to extricate the trapped victims. Delano Engine 6-10 arrived and staged behind Rescue 26 on the roadway. The Delano Township fire fighters advance onto the scene to assist with rescue operations.
The vehicle was first stabilized with cribbing by the fire fighters. The rescuers then went to work first by gaining access to the trapped driver. He was then removed from the vehicle and taken to the Ryan Township ambulance. He was then taken to a local hospital by ground. The passenger was still confined to the vehicle by the dashboard and needed to be free. The rescue tool operator cut the passenger side fender and then displaced the dashboard. The passenger was then extricated and moved to a spinal board. Fire fighters then assist the EMS personnel by removing the victim from the vehicle. The second patient was then carried to the second Ryan Township ambulance to be treated.
The Ryan Township Ambulance was then to transport the extricated injured passenger to the landing zone. The dispatch center then informed the EMS crew that the helicopter canceled due to the snowy weather. The second Ryan Township Ambulance then transported the seriously injured passenger to a local hospital in Pottsville.
Fire police and Engine 6-10 stood by on the scene while the tow truck removed the wrecked vehicle from the wood line. The Burma Road was shut down for an hour during the rescue and clean up operations.
