RUSH TOWNSHIP (SCHUYLKILL COUNTY), PA - On January 5, 2011 at 15:15 hours the Rush Township-Quakake and Hometown Fire Companies, Tamaqua Rescue, Medic 11 and Ryan Township Ambulance were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment. The accident involved three vehicles and was just east of the Lakeside Ballroom on Route 54 in Rush Township.
Rush Township Police went on scene and found three vehicles involved with one driver trapped. Two vehicles were into each other and resting against the guardrails with the occupants self extricated. The third vehicle was blocking the intersection with the female driver seriously injured. Hometown Engine 25-10 arrived on scene and evaluated the entrapment for the responding rescue company. Rush Township Police and Fire Police established traffic control at the scene of the accident.
The crews from Medic 11 and Ambulance 976 assessed all the vehicle operators for injuries. They determined the trapped driver would need to be taken to a trauma center. A medical helicopter was then requested and ordered to fly to the scene. The helicopter was told to land to a near by parking lot at the Lakeside Ballroom in Ryan Township. Ryan and Delano Township Fire Companies were then dispatched to the Lakeside Ballroom to set up a landing zone.
Quakake Engine 25-15 arrived and was directed to go to the landing zone to stand by. Tamaqua Rescue 992 arrived and staged behind Engine 25-10. The rescue crew deployed their hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the trapped victim. The vehicle was stabilized with cribbing by the fire fighters first. The rescuers then went to work first by gaining access to the trapped driver. The rescue tool operator cut the passenger side B Post and removed the two doors. The rescuers then assist the EMS personnel by removing the victim from the vehicle.
It was determine additional EMS units were needed due to the additional injuries. Tamaqua and Mahanoy City Ambulances were then dispatched and responded to the accident scene. The Tamaqua and Mahanoy City EMS Crews then evaluated the other operators for injuries. The Ryan Township Ambulance then transported the extricated injured driver to the landing zone. The seriously injured driver was then flown to a trauma center. The Mahanoy City Ambulance transported the one occupant to a local hospital.
Fire police and Engine 25-10 stood by on the scene while the tow trucks removed the wrecked vehicles. Route 54 was shut down for a 1-½ hours to wait clean up and caused a major back log in local traffic. One non-injured driver was taken into custody by police and transported to the hospital for BAC test.
